STUDY COMPETITION

Why do we have to study competition? Why would you even care about the other people?
"Understanding the general level of your own craft is quite important. Even if you wish to
master something you yet lack of the general taste around that subject."
One of the best skills an artist can have is the ability to understand if his or her creation is good
or bad. You set the level, but generally there is always a common sense behind the liking. Its a
combination between art and product. A professional photographer could decide to pick the "full art" path and not care about what the other people think.

From my experience thou, a photographer (especially at the beginning) will always be faced
with the reality: clients. If you do want to please a client, you need to respect the product he is
looking for.
Even if you don't want to become a professional photographer and take picture for a hobby
you should study competition as well. You mission should be to develop you own self critiques
sense. I meet hundreds of photographer every week and most of them fail to see past their
limitation.

I understand how important is to believe in
your own skills but this is not going to help
you in the long run. There is always a reason
why a photographer is better than you and
believe it or not, the chances for you to
become the best photographer in your field
is close to 0.
90% of photographers fail to become
profitable. Did you know? It is a lot of people.
How can you be part of that 10%?
This is the answer: Study your opponents,

learn from that 10%, what they do, the way they work.

It is always a combination between you
own personal art and the technicality of the service you will provide. It's important to
understand that as photographer you will do your best to deliver a good service and a good
product.
Knowing how to take a good picture is not enough in 2017. A lot of people can take beautiful
images, but not as many can treat their clients in the proper way.

This is a quick guide to help you with this process:
1) Decide which kind of photographer you want to
be.
2) Google who are the most famous photographer
in that field.
3) Do a research on Pinterest and put together a
mood board with the best images you see from
different photographers.
4) Compare your work with everything you have
found.
This exercise (that i always do when i have a new
client i have never worked with) will help you
tremendously. This is where you should recognize
the gap level between the top and you.
Your goal from now on should be to FILL THAT GAP.
